Introduction
When I first started playing poker it took some time to get used to how people talk online. It seems like everyone is talking in code. But, used well, it's great. You can be economical (e.g. by using two letters instead of two words) without losing any of your original meaning (and "wp" can be just as sarcastic as "Well-played!") thus giving yourself more time to carry on doing whatever else you were up to at the same time. There are certain rules, however. I recommend:
(i) Write everything in lower case. There's just no need to spend time capitalising "i" or names. After a while it just looks wrong. Use uppercase for emphasis (writing full sentences in uppercase is called SHOUTING and should be used sparingly if at all; to me it suggests you're either annoyed about something or that you actually have little of worth to say - it can however be used for humour too).
(ii) What you write should be easily decipherable. Something like: "12cu@94gamek?" may be decipherable but its certainly not easily read. So you're saving yourself time but not anyone who has to read it.
(iii) If you don't know what something means, ask.
(iv) If you aren't sure, use longhand. I spent a while typing in "unlucky" in place of "ul" because I wasn't sure whether it stood for "unlucky" or "You lose!".
