Cash Games
There's a lot of casual game sites springing up where you can play quick games and compete for cash prizes. A well established one I play on is King.com which hosts over 60 different games. They have some nostalgic games with spins on games like Tetris, Puzzle Bobble and Breakout, a number of card games and word games, as well as quite a few original games of their own. You can play for free or compete in cash tournaments. For the cash games you have a ranking to ensure you play against people of a similar standard but when you start out you'll be playing against the lowest ranked players which can be quite an advantage if you learn the games quickly.
Here are a few others I'm in the process of trying out:
Boxerjam - Haven't played yet.
Game Account - I've only played the free trial games so far. It seems to be aimed at rather high stakes predominantly and quite a few of the games can only be played 'against the house'. The games I've tried are very nicely made though.
SkillGround - Haven't played yet.
WorldWinner - I've tried this one now. It's not generally as well made as King but has some good games and daily freerolls. My two main problems with it are (i) you have to pay tax on your winnings in any tournament (unless you send a form to the US IRS claiming exemption), and also (ii) you don't get the same game as your opponents (if you enter the same tournament twice you get different setups each time) which increases the luck factor imo.
